Street Photography One on One

Last month one of our students Philip Shaw had a Street Photography one to one session with tutor and street photographer Luke Forsythe.
Meeting out on location in the centre of London on Oxford Street they spent the 3 jam-packed hours scouring the streets of Soho capturing all of the fascinating activity and life that London has to offer, working with fantastic angles, bizarre subjects and a whole range of exciting light sources.

Below are some of the shots Philip took on the day depicting the captivating colours, people and places in the heart of London…

Family Politics show at The Jerwood Space

This month you should pop down to The Jerwood Space and have a look around the Family Politics exhibition.

The exhibition is showing new commissions and existing work by six early career photographers relating to ‘Family Politics’.
Exhibiting artists include invited artists Claudia Sola and The Photocopy Club; and artists selected from an open call, Jonny Briggs, Robert Crosse, Nikolai Ishchuk and Joanna Piotrowska. The exhibition explores the different ways in which artists consider and use photographic practice resulting in an expanded view of the medium.

“As a subject, the family is both private and public: the site of intimate inter-personal relations and a social construct subject to public and political pressures. This relationship is mirrored in examples of family photography. The majority of family pictures serve essentially private functions, accruing meaning through their relationship to the memories, experiences and histories of individuals. However, the family is also the subject of public photographic representation and contestation largely through digital media and ‘over sharing’. This involves a wide variety of practices, including representations in the mass media, art and advertising.”JS

Grace from the PCL office has some photographs included in this exhibition. See if you can spot them!

The exhibition runs for the whole of November, ending 8 December

What is Stock Photography?

© Bethany de Forest, Craig Easton, Lottie Davies

You may have heard of the words stock and images libraries before, but what exactly are they and how will shooting stock photography make a difference to your photography? We asked our seminar tutor Zoe Whishaw these exact questions, and this is what she told us…

What is Stock Photography?
“Creative Stock photography is pre-shot, ready-to-go, model released, unbranded imagery that is available for immediate use. An ideal stock image can be interpreted in a variety of ways and so be of value to a range of end users who can buy a license to use the image to sell a produce or service, for which the photographer receives a royalty.”

…and how can shooting Stock benefit photographers?
“All photographers need to explore ways to boost and develop their business. If the principles behind generating powerful stock images are well understood, placing work with a stock agency can provide a photographer with a valuable additional revenue stream alongside their other photographic endeavours. It can also be a great opportunity to further develop a personal portfolio of work through the exploration of visual metaphors and ideas. ”

Self Portrait competition winners!

The winners of our latest Self Portrait themed competition have been announced…!

First place has been awarded to Rosie Berwick, with her fantastic Photogram.

We asked Rosie what her inspiration behind this image was….
“I hate having my photo taken! This was an idea formed out of an exhibition at the V&A a couple of years ago called Shadow Catchers and a cameraless photography course i recently did. For this picture, I took a photo of my shadow and printed it onto paper. I then cut out a template of the negative space around me and exposed it as a photogram in the dark room. I like the way it doesn’t entirely make sense and makes the viewer question how it was done ( well maybe only if they are interested in photography!)”

Rosie has won a mounted 20×24″ print from The Print Space – www.theprintspace.co.uk

Second place goes to Estelle Vincent with her Photo Booth snaps. Estelle used an old fashioned style photo booth to create her image, and as a photographer herself she enjoys working with film and alternative processes.
Very imaginative and unique Estelle, we love it!

Third place went too Claire Ottley. Claire went for the more classic self portrait shot, but she added a great creative twist by using her phone and some ageing effects to give that extra boost to the vintage image she was portraying, with her faux fur coat and bright red lipstick.
Stunning!

Both Estelle and Claire have won a 20×24″ print of their choice from The Print Space.
