Calling all IdeasTap members!

IdeasTap have teamed up with Save the Children and Magnum Photos to give one lucky IdeasTap member the photography opportunity of a lifetime.
Right from the beginning, photography has been at the heart of Save the Children’s campaigns. Documenting real people, in their environment, and sharing their personal experiences with mass audiences, is key to the charity’s visual communications.
One applicant will win the opportunity to undertake an international photographic commission in Central America for Save the Children. The winner will be mentored during the trip by Magnum photographer Alex Webb and also win £1,000 from IdeasTap.

All you need to do is submit a photo essay of five to 10 images, which documents a community and illustrates how its residents relate to their environment. The series must include at least one portrait, contextual images and be in colour. One winner will be selected by a panel of industry judges at the beginning of November. Judges include Alex Webb and Jess Crombie, head of visual creative for Save the Children. The judges are looking for a photographer with a strong sense of style and excellent technical ability.

The assignment will take place sometime between 19 November and 5 December (only enter if you will be available to travel at this time). The purpose of this trip will be to gather stories that can be used in the media about how climate change is affecting children in the region.

Closing date Friday 24 October 2014 at 5pm BST

‘Francesca Woodman | Zigzag’, at Victoria Miro Mayfair, 9 Sep to 4 Oct

When was the last time you saw some photography that really inspired you?

Throughout September, the Victoria Miro Mayfair gallery is showing the work of Francesca Woodman, a highly regarded American artist who photographed prolifically during her short lived life.

The theme of this exhibition unusually considers the underlying geometrical forms that reoccur throughout Woodman’s photographs. Typically it has been the surreal and symbolic elements that have been prominent, but here you are asked to look into the composition, the lines and angles, and particularly the shape of the zig zag. Woodman’s father has said, “Domination by a zig-zag motif is very rare… It creates a world of flux without horizon, a rhythmic oscillation.”

Seeing this work in an art gallery, who’s artists include the likes of Grayson Perry and Chris-Ofili seems fitting, as you’re invited to view her work as art, and away from the ever cascading sea of imagery that surrounds our daily lives.

Why not take an afternoon to have a quiet stroll through this exhibition, and see if you can spot some zig zags, and perhaps a dozen more underlying themes that are present in Woodman’s work, and maybe, just maybe this could be the inspiration you have been looking for.

‘Francesca Woodman | Zigzag’ runs at Victoria Miro Mayfair, 14 St George Street, London, W1S 1FE, until 4 October 2014.

But he hasn’t stopped there. Simon also has another article which he also wrote,
‘The Photographer’s Story’, where he talks about the amazing work of the tile maker of Herat, Afghanistan.
With a selection of gorgeously coloured photographs, this story really makes you appreciate the beauty of the mosques and the effort that goes into making these truly spectacular pieces of art.

Below are a few sneaky shots but make sure to check out both the articles in full in the August issue of the magazine!

London Underground

There’s a great new photography exhibition on show at The Howard Griffin Gallery in Shoreditch at the moment that you really need to see.

Street photographer Bob Mazzer has been photographing on the tube for the past 30 years. On his daily commute when he used to work as a projectionist in a porn cinema, Mazzer would snap the activity that surrounded him on the tube and he has continued to do so ever since.
This exhibition houses a great collection of images from the 1970’s and 1980’s that document the goings on, fashions, daily life and humour of Londoners as they travel on the London underground.

The exhibition is showing until 13th July at the Howard Griffin gallery and and extra bonus is that it’s free so there’s not excuse to miss this one!

The old Kodak Factory

We stumbled across these photographs documenting the Kodak factory in Rochester, New York by photographer Catherine Leutenegger last week, and we still can’t stop looking at them.

The once thriving factory is now run-down and very much worse for wear.
In this series Leutenegge captures what was once the industrial hub for photography but now all that’s left are a collection of deserted factories, dated interiors and empty offices.
