Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2015 – Call for Entries

The Natural History Museum are now calling for entries for the 51st Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition. Wildlife Photographer of the Year harnesses the power of photography to inspire greater understanding of the natural world, challenging perceptions and encouraging change to preserve the beauty and diversity of Earth for future generations. Lets have a look at some of the entries from 2014, which are currently being exhibited at the Natural History Museum.

wildlife-photographer-year-2014 2014’s overall winner was Michael Nichols with this image of five lionesses and their cubs. The image was taken in Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park. Nichols had been following this particular pride for nearly six months.

wildlife-photographeeer-year-2014 This stunning image was captured by Jan van der Greef. The sword-billed hummingbird on the right, fends off the collard inca bird to get to a bird feed. Sword-billed hummingbirds are the only birds with a bill longer than its body. They use them to reach the nectar at the base of flowers. Fascinating!

Will Jenkins captured this stunning image whilst on holiday in Costa Rica. This meter long green iguana jumped down from the hotel roof and posed long enough for Jenkins to get an awesome shot.

Bruno D’Amicis took this photo of a three month old fennec fox in Tunisia. Catching or killing wild fennec foxes is illegal in Tunisia but D’Amicis discovered widespread exploitation of the foxes for commercial trade and traditional medicine. Super sad! The 2014 Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition is on at the Natural History Museum until 30 August 2015. Entry is £12.50 Entries for 2015 Competition must be in by Thursday 26 February.

Open Call! – One Eyed Jacks

Brighton’s One Eyed Jacks is pleased to announce the launch of its first Open Call to promote the works of lens-based artists from across the world. Winners will have their work shown at the gallery as part of a group show for a month from 07 January 2015. The Open Call will begin a series of submission-based shows over the coming years juried by a single person with a unique vision. The first show will be curated by British Journal of Photography’s Senior Reporter, Gemma Padley.
The show will feature a private view on the opening night, and all the usual marketing efforts in the locality and on the national and international stage via our extensive mailing list. It’s a fantastic opportunity to have your work shown in a gallery context and to build up your exhibition CV.

Honourable mentions: 2 x £100

The exhibition is open to all photographers worldwide, both amateur and professional. One Eyed Jacks invites photographers working in all mediums, styles and schools of thought to participate in its exhibitions.

Usage rights: Each artist retains full copyright of their images. Artist recognition is provided with all use. By submitting works for jurying, artists whose submissions are chosen for the exhibition grant One Eyed Jacks gallery the right to use their images for the purpose of promoting exhibitions and the artist, and subsequent display on the gallery’s website. Images may also be placed on One Eyed Jacks’ social network channels with an artist credit for promotional purposes. Artists grant the use of their image(s) as stated without further contact or compensation from the gallery.

Save the Children International Photography Commission (For aged 18-30)

Calling all IdeasTap members!

IdeasTap have teamed up with Save the Children and Magnum Photos to give one lucky IdeasTap member the photography opportunity of a lifetime.
Right from the beginning, photography has been at the heart of Save the Children’s campaigns. Documenting real people, in their environment, and sharing their personal experiences with mass audiences, is key to the charity’s visual communications.
One applicant will win the opportunity to undertake an international photographic commission in Central America for Save the Children. The winner will be mentored during the trip by Magnum photographer Alex Webb and also win £1,000 from IdeasTap.

All you need to do is submit a photo essay of five to 10 images, which documents a community and illustrates how its residents relate to their environment. The series must include at least one portrait, contextual images and be in colour. One winner will be selected by a panel of industry judges at the beginning of November. Judges include Alex Webb and Jess Crombie, head of visual creative for Save the Children. The judges are looking for a photographer with a strong sense of style and excellent technical ability.

The assignment will take place sometime between 19 November and 5 December (only enter if you will be available to travel at this time). The purpose of this trip will be to gather stories that can be used in the media about how climate change is affecting children in the region.

Photographer Simon Urwin

We’re really excited to share with you the work of photographer Simon Urwin, who has his photographs in two articles in the August issue of Lonely Planet Traveller magazine.

Simon is a long term friend of Photography Course London and we were thrilled to receive this latest surprise in the post! He has been travelling around Laos in Southeast Asia and capturing the stunning Buddhist temples, amazing food and truly stunning architecture and it’s design.

But he hasn’t stopped there. Simon also has another article which he also wrote,
‘The Photographer’s Story’, where he talks about the amazing work of the tile maker of Herat, Afghanistan.
With a selection of gorgeously coloured photographs, this story really makes you appreciate the beauty of the mosques and the effort that goes into making these truly spectacular pieces of art.

Award winning tutor! “Prix de la Photographie, Paris”

PCL tutor and photographer Tariq Zaidi has won several awards in the recent ‘Prix de la Photographie Paris (PX3)’ competition – www.px3.fr

This competition is Europe’s biggest professional photography competition with entires from per 85 countries across the world. The ‘Prix de la Photographie Paris’ strives to promote the appreciation of photography, to discover emerging taint and introduce photographers from around the world to the artistic community in paris.

Tariq has won the 4 following awards –

First prize in the Portraiture category with ‘Women of the Omo Valley, Ethiopia’
First prize in the Fine Art category with ‘The Tire, Kids in Danakil Series, Ethiopia’
Second place in the Portraiture category with ‘Eclipse’

Free studio lighting workshop!

Would you like to learn how to shoot great images in a studio and pick up some great tips and tricks along the way?
Then why not sign up for this free 1 day course for a day that promises to be oodles of fun and a great way to gain studio and lighting experience.

Contrary to common beliefs you don’t need a studio full of lights to create a great image only a head full of ideas and some technical knowledge on how to realise them.
Brought to you by Olympus and delivered by PCL tutor Cleveland Aaron, this workshop aims to help you develop what you already know and introduce you to a few things you may not. Working in a controlled environment you’ll be examining different qualities and effects of light on our subject and ways of composing using negative space (also referred to as rule of space). We’ll be using the OMD E-M1’s in-built filters to customise the way we present our images and discussing the importance of communication with your subject.

Self Portrait competition winners!

The winners of our latest Self Portrait themed competition have been announced…!

First place has been awarded to Rosie Berwick, with her fantastic Photogram.

We asked Rosie what her inspiration behind this image was….
“I hate having my photo taken! This was an idea formed out of an exhibition at the V&A a couple of years ago called Shadow Catchers and a cameraless photography course i recently did. For this picture, I took a photo of my shadow and printed it onto paper. I then cut out a template of the negative space around me and exposed it as a photogram in the dark room. I like the way it doesn’t entirely make sense and makes the viewer question how it was done ( well maybe only if they are interested in photography!)”

Second place goes to Estelle Vincent with her Photo Booth snaps. Estelle used an old fashioned style photo booth to create her image, and as a photographer herself she enjoys working with film and alternative processes.
Very imaginative and unique Estelle, we love it!

Third place went too Claire Ottley. Claire went for the more classic self portrait shot, but she added a great creative twist by using her phone and some ageing effects to give that extra boost to the vintage image she was portraying, with her faux fur coat and bright red lipstick.
Stunning!

Both Estelle and Claire have won a 20×24″ print of their choice from The Print Space.
